How to Use Wood to Make Your Interiors Elegant and Timeless

What’s not to love about wood in interior design? It fills the home with warmth and adds a soothing touch. While wood has been used in Indian homes from times immemorial, this material is truly timeless in its ability to fit seamlessly into your interiors. If you have fallen for the charm of warm wood as well, this Mumbai home is sure to mesmerise you.

The Joshis’ home in Mumbai, designed for three generations of the family, comes with plenty of wooden elements. What stands out in this home is the innovative use of wood in interior design. From functional aspects to decor, this home uses wooden finishes everywhere. And it does not stop with merely traditional designs, there is a fair share of contemporary and modern elements as well. Let’s take a look at the quick visual tour.

Catering to different design styles

Carved swing and wooden accent wall brings this room together

Creating distinct spaces, divided by a wooden panel

The Joshis’ home comprises two combined apartments in Vile Parle, making it a large 4BHK. So it comes with a massive living room. For this space, Livspace designer Yogita Itkarkar crafted two distinct areas. And the best part—the ample use of wooden elements. Behind the turquoise blue accent chairs, the choice of the right laminate and mirror cladding makes the simple space stand out. And on the opposite side, you can’t miss the Ganesha motif that adds character to the  space.

However, the heart of this living space is the dainty wooden swing. If you’re thinking what made this piece look as elegant as it is, we’ll let you in on a secret—it’s solid wood.

Gypsum ceiling and wooden polish for the fifth wall

If you love the quintessentially desi living room, you are in for a surprise! On the other side of the living room, the Joshis have a cosy space that’s sure to charm you. Watch out for the contemporary breakfast counter that creates a cosy seating space for two. Yogita has amped up the fifth wall in this space with a gypsum false ceiling, polished to perfection to accentuate the look. Wooden beams in the corner make the space look seamless yet quaint.

Cafe-inspired reading nook to spend long hours peacefully

Charmed, are we? Wait till you step inside and check out the reading nook. The bookshelf in this nook reminds us of all the fun times spent reading in book cafes. With a cafe-inspired wooden laminate bookshelf on the wall, this room turns into an oasis of calm. The laminate bookshelf also matches the warm wood in interior design favoured across the home.

Finding fine wooden finishes

Swing doors with membrane finish to compliment the room

In this bedroom dressed in blues, a modular wardrobe with a membrane finish becomes the perfect fit. The light coloured wood compliments the interiors of the room, while looking as seamless as can be!

Wooden laminate finishes that are easy to maintain

With an intricate pattern on the wallpaper and a plush purple headboard, this bedroom makes a bold statement. Yogita opted for a laminate wardrobe with lofts in this space to meet the storage requirements. So the choice of colour and texture beautifully balances the delicate wallpaper but stands out with the purple headboard. Simple yet functional, don’t you think?

Trundle bed to accommodate guests

When a young child asks for a peppy room full of life, how can a designer not oblige? The cheery yellow and grey room is beautifully balanced by wooden elements in the space. A classic trundle bed leaves plenty of space in the room and can also cater to guests staying over. And the wooden shelves behind the bed tie in with the colour scheme of the room effortlessly.
